10 Piece Ensemble Charts

Piece of Silver

I’ve always been a fan of Horace Silver’s music, consistently brought to life by a band of the finest sidemen whether it was Tom Harrell and Bob Berg or Michael Brecker and his brother Randy. As the title suggests, this original is a tribute to Horace and is very reminiscent of his style. The 7/4 time signature makes the funky groove a little challenging, but the solo section is in 4/4.

Instrumentation: Alto, Tenor, Baritone, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone & Rhythm and optional violin and wordless soprano vocal
Grade Level: Medium – Difficult

With a Little Help…

This chart is based loosely on the famous Beatles tune, but with a significant face lift! Soloists featured are soprano sax (on alto chair) and guitar. Audiences have found this inventive chart to be captivating.

Instrumentation: Alto, Tenor, Baritone, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone & Rhythm
Grade Level: Medium – Difficult

Naima

Another arrangement of this Coltrane classic, but in this not a ballad but an up tempo version. The chart begins with a free section that eludes to the tune before the tempo is established. Solos for 2nd trumpet and or tenor and drums. All things considered, a very different take on this classic Trane tune.

Instrumentation: Alto, Tenor, Baritone, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone & Rhythm and optional violin
Grade Level:Difficult

Giant Steps

Yes, believe it or not yet another take on “Giant Steps,” John Coltrane’s signature piece along with several others. This was the first completed in a trilogy tribute to Trane (check out Naima also available for 10 piece band). Lots of re-harmonizations, changing meters and challenging ensemble sections present rewarding moments for the band and audience. Solos are for guitar or piano, tenor sax and drums.

Instrumentation: alto, tenor, bari sax, 2 tpts, T-bone, piano, guitar, bass, drums
Grade Level:Difficult

Peculiar

An arrangement of John Scofield’s second line style tune that appear on his CD Groove Elation. The ostinato bass line and drum groove keeps this chart moving right along and the horns evoke a modern Gil Evans sound with doubles on alto (flute) and tenor (soprano). The groove works best when the keyboard player uses an organ/synth sound. Extended solo space for guitar, keyboard and horns if desired. The groove might be challenging for some to achieve but the horn parts are not particularly difficult.

Instrumentation: alto/flute, tenor/soprano, bari sax, 2 tpts, T-bone w/plunger, piano (synth preferred), guitar, bass, drums
Grade Level: Medium-Difficult

A MIDI file is the only demo available at this time.

You’re Under Arrest

This arrangement of John Scofield’s title track from the late Miles Davis Album is based losely on rhythm changes with a few twists and in a funky modern style. Gil Evans late style can be heard as influences in this very contemporary chart.  Lots of solo flexibility includes space for keyboard, guitar, alto and tenor saxophone.

Instrumentation: alto/soprano, tenor, bari sax, 2 tpts , T-bone, piano (synth preferred), guitar, bass, drums
Grade Level: Difficult

Chasing After Dreams (10 Piece Chart)

This is a scaled down version of the big band chart that can also be found on Rick Lawn.com (listen to big band chart recorded on Unknown Soldiers by the Third Coast Jazz Orchestra). The chart is essentially the same and serves as a beautiful ballad feature for tenor sax throughout. Alto doubles on flute.

Instrumentation: alto/flute, tenor, bari sax, 2 tpts (dbl flugel), T-bone, piano, guitar, bass, drums
Grade Level: Medium-Difficult

Quiet Please!

As the title implies, this is a laid back soprano feature with added solo space for bass and drums. Bass clarinet is on the usual bari sax chair throughout. A challenging shout chorus is also featured in this introspective original that will make people stop and listen.

Tapestry

Those of us from the “Boomer” generation couldn’t get enough of Carole King’s Tapestry album (there…I’m dating myself!). I couldn’t resist the temptation to take a second look at the title tune from this landmark recording, giving it a fresh new sound. Ample solo space is provided for piano, guitar, and choices between trumpet, alto and tenor.

So What

Composer/arranger George Russell gave me the idea for this different slant on the famous Miles Davis recording. In this case, everybody gets a chance to play Miles’ seminal solo over a very funky rhythm section groove. The solo section can be opened up for just about anyone in the band with a background on cue that hearkens back to the original tune – and the only time you hear the tune itself.

Instrumentation: Alto, tenor, bari., 2-tpts, 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar & Drums

Grade Level: Medium
