Power of 10

Power of 10, and sometimes 11, is a powerful little big band comprised of some of Philadelphia’s finest jazz musicians. Individually they have impressive resumes and collectively they present Rick Lawn’s contemporary writing with a sound and style that is incomparable. Many of these original compositions and unique arrangements are available for purchase on this web site so if you’re interested follow the links. Some charts will be made available in the near future.

Upcoming Performances

Power of 10’s next gig will be a concert September 10th at the Philadelphia Art Museum in the Art After 5 series starting at 5:00 PM. Please join us.

We anticipate a gig in September or October at Chris’ Jazz Cafe so keep checking this site for details

A nice moderate swing tune based on rhythm changes and some nice Thad-like ensemble voicings. A strong sax soli and open solo sections make this chart an excellent teaching tool and concert selection for high school and college big bands.

Fusion style ala Freddie Hubbard circa. 1970s featuring trumpet and tenor. Electric piano works nice in this chart. Solo sections include a free section for the quintet that serves as the featured nucleus of this chart.

Scored for medium jazz bands, this hip shuffle by Rick Lawn resembles an extended minor blues. Highlights include modest brass ranges, written rhythm section parts, solos for trumpet, piano and guitar, and a terrific sax soli. An optional guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included.

Finders Keepers

Good ballads in any style are difficult to find and this contemporary funk groove is definitely a keeper. Alto sax is showcased in the popular David Sanborn tradition and a contrasting bossa nova solo section spotlights piano or guitar.
