10 Piece Ensemble Charts

Earth Tones

This title track from the Power of Ten’s CD has 3 distinct sections, each relating to one another. The dramatic conducted first section features a rubato tempo and mixed meter, exposing the primary theme that is further explored in the 2 sections that follow. The second section in 6/4 is very Afro-Cuban and might remind you of early Yellow Jackets grooves. The final minimalist section features a drum solo before the return to the 6/4 groove and climax to the end.

Soprano soloist in the opening section who gets a chance to improvise into the open lid and strings of an acoustic piano to produce an unusual affect! Electric or acoustic bass is fine the the recording features electric. Solos can be opened up for nearly anyone, though the recording features trombone and vibes.

Instrumentation: Alto/flute; ten/soprano; bari.; 2-tpts, 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar; Drums

No Regrets

A moving ballad written on my 60th birthday and finally scored for 10 piece band to feature the beautiful flugelhorn sound of George Rabbai. Not a particularly difficult chart, the opening ballad seques to a double time bossa feel for the solo section. What will make the chart challenging for some bands are the doubles – lead alto doubles on flute and bari plays bass clarinet, though an alternate bari only part is included. Vibes are optional but desirable. Woodwind parts are quite easy. A recording of this piece is available on the Power of Ten’s CD Earth Tones available on this site.

Out On a Limb (10 Piece Version)

Scored for Power of 10, this arrangement is much like the big band version also available through this web site. A tour de force for trumpet and tenor, the Latin and Swing sections along with the harmonic scheme suggests the standard Green Dolphin Street, but hipper! The original big band version can be heard on the Sea Breeze CD Unknown Soldiers recorded by the Third Coast Jazz Orchestra and also available through this web site.

Instrumentation: Alto; ten; bari.; 2-tpts, 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar; Drums

Grade Level: Medium-Difficult

Hopscotch (10 Piece Version)

Score for Power of 10, this scaled down version is very similar to the big band version also available here at RickLawn.Com. A bari sax feature, this unique original can also feature your a member of your rhythm section as soloist such as piano or guitar. One major change compared to the big band version is that the blowing section in this version is based on “Bye, Bye Blackbird” changes. There are no doubles required on the sax parts, but you had better have a strong baritone player and pianist to pull off this uptempo feature.

As yet there is no recording available, but you can listen to a rough recording of the big band version on this web site.

Retrospect (10 Piece Band Version)

This moody soprano sax feature can also feature your pianist. Predominantly a ballad in 3/4 & 9/8. The haunting and introspective qualities of this melody yield to a short, double-time chorus that also serves as a surprise intro. Lush harmonies and woodwind doubles, flugel horns and counter-lines abound.

Instrumentation: Alto/flute; ten/soprano; bari/clar.; 2-tpts (dbl flugel), 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar & Drums

We Free Kings

This holiday classic is perfect for gigs during the December season. Nice straight ahead 3/4 offers solo space for rhythm or horn soloists. Don’t let the warped title fool you, as the changes have been warped too! This is definitely not the one the carolers have been singing for years.

Instrumentation: Alto/flute; ten/soprano; bari/clar.; 2-tpts (dbl flugel), 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar & Drums

Sigh of the Soul

This is a haunting arrangement of the 4th movement from Paule Maurice’s Tableaux de Provence originally for alto saxophone and piano. This classical saxophone piece has been a staple in the solo repertoire for decades and is clearly informed by jazz harmonies and the blues. Solos in this arrangement are for piano and/or vibes and alto sax. The piece isn’t terrible difficult though I’ve marked it as such only because of a few high notes for trumpet 1 and the doubles for alto and bari players.

Instrumentation: Alto/flute; ten/soprano; bari/clar.; 2-tpts (dbl flugel), 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar & Drums

Grade Level: Medium-Difficult

Hey, Gates

Dedicated to Lionel Hampton, this straight ahead rhythm changes chart hints at Hamp’s signature tune “Flying Home.” Just like Lester Young often referred to everyone as Lady xxx, Hamp called everyone “Gates.” Two solo separate sections for vibes or piano and trumpet can be opened up for more soloists. The chart also briefly features drums in exchanges with the band. Alto doubles on flute and soprano and tenor sax doubles on soprano.

Instrumentation: alto dbl. sop. & fl; tenor dbl. sop.; bari; 2-tpts; bone; piano/vibes; guitar; bass; drums

Ease It!

Based on the Paul Chambers/Cannonball Adderley blues head, this charts is arranged in a style reminiscent of Gil Evans’ imaginative early orchestrations. Solo sections for bass and just about any other instrument abound. Solo backgrounds help to propel things forward to an exciting shout chorus. Alto doubles on flute. This chart challenges your bassist to step up.

Instrumentation: Alto dbl flute; ten; bari; 2-tpts, 1 bone, Piano/Vibes, Bass, Guitar & Drums

Grade Level: Medium-Difficult

Eleven (petits machins)

Rhythmically speaking this chart is very challenging at first reading as would be expected of something that served as Gil Evans theme song in latter years. Bands will need a stout lead trumpet player and sturdy rhythm section to make this arrangement work.  This tune is essentially the same tune recorded by Miles Davis’ great quintet in the mid-1960s and retitled Petits Machins (Little Stuff). There is plenty of solo space for second trumpet and alto sax and/or rhythm.

Instrumentation: Alto, Tenor, Baritone, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone & Rhythm
Grade Level:Difficult
