Power of 10, and sometimes 11, is a powerful little big band comprised of some of Philadelphia’s finest jazz musicians. Individually they have impressive resumes and collectively they present Rick Lawn’s contemporary writing with a sound and style that is incomparable. Many of these original compositions and unique arrangements are available for purchase on this web site so if you’re interested follow the links. Some charts will be made available in the near future.

Upcoming Performances

Power of 10’s next gig will be a concert September 10th at the Philadelphia Art Museum in the Art After 5 series starting at 5:00 PM. Please join us.

We anticipate a gig in September or October at Chris’ Jazz Cafe so keep checking this site for details

Rapsodie for Saxophone (arr. for quartet)

Greg Knapp’s stunning transcription and arrangement of Claude Debussy’s work composed for saxophone soloist and orchestra is far more exciting than the original, often criticized as an uninspired effort. This arrangement was informed by original orchestral recordings and the unorchestrated piano/soloist score. The orchestral reduction that includes significant soloist passages pushes the skills of the quartet to its limits both technically and musically. The work was recorded by the Nova Saxophone Quartet on their InNOVAtions recording available in digital download format from Cd Baby.

This challenging arrangement by Rick Lawn is featured on the Nova Saxophone Quartet’s recording Double Image. Follow the link to audition and excerpt of this recording or purchase the entire album. This arrangement is based, note for note, on the original Jelly Roll Morton Red Hot Peppers recording including Rick’s orchestration of the banjo solo across the quartet! Sax-O-Doodle

Rudy Wiedoeft was one of the most important early American saxophonists. Popular during the days of early radio vaudevillian times, Wiedoeft was a widely recognized soloist who created a flashy, virtuosic solo repertoire. He was of significant influence on many early jazz saxophonists, though he was not classified as a jazz player.
